Texas's 34th congressional district is composed of the area on the Gulf Coast between Brownsville and Corpus Christi, the latter of which being situated in the neighbouring 27th congressional district, with a portion turning inland into the rural portions of the state. The district is currently represented by Vicente Gonzalez ( D- McAllen), who was redistricted there from Texas's 15th congressional district. The first candidates ran in the 2012 elections the winner, Democrat Filemon Vela Jr., was seated for the 113th United States Congress. In July 2013, he decided to quit the Congressional Hispanic Caucus because of his opposition to the Hoeven-Corker Amendment that tied border security with a pathway to citizenship. In the general election, Vela defeated Republican Jessica Bradshaw 62% to 36%, winning the election. In the July 31 run-off primary, Vela defeated Denise Saenz Blanchard 67% to 33%. 
In the May 29 primary, Vela ranked first in an 8-candidate field with 40% of the vote. Vela decided to run in the newly created Texas's 34th congressional district as a Democrat. Landmark, Vela represented Edinburg to fight for more funding.
Vela also represented several South Texas school districts. Walmart, in which Vela represented a group of American farm workers who were told they could not shop in a Mississippi store.
